Mandarin Learning Levels: Novice, Intermediate & Advanced

Panda Passport offers three learning paths inspired by ACTFL proficiency descriptions. Choose a level for a mission rather than treating a student’s age or grade as their language level.
Novice: words and familiar phrases
Practice familiar situations with words, phrases, and simple sentences. For example, recognize a place or choose a short request such as 请问，出口在哪里？ (Qǐngwèn, chūkǒu zài nǎlǐ? — Excuse me, where is the exit?).
Intermediate: connected sentences
Work with short conversations and connected sentences in familiar situations. Ask for details, choose an appropriate response, and use information from a travel scene to decide what to do next.
Advanced: connected narration and complications
Work with paragraph-length language to narrate, describe, compare, and explain. Existing scenarios include a platform change and a closed teahouse, asking learners to understand a complication and explain a revised plan.
How to choose a level
Start with a familiar mission and look at the amount of support a learner needs. Teachers can pair the game with spoken or written follow-up tasks. Completing a multiple-choice mission alone does not demonstrate a learner’s overall ACTFL proficiency.
